Founded in 2011 by Christian Gross and Dr. Misha S. Kruck, Okavango Air Rescue was created to bring world-class medical helicopter rescue services to the remote and hard-to-reach regions of Botswana. Inspired by Dr. Kruck’s long-standing experience with Switzerland’s renowned REGA air rescue service, the founders introduced the same level of professional, mountain-grade emergency care to the heart of the Okavango Delta—beginning with a single Jetranger helicopter and a bold vision.

Since becoming operational in October 2012, OAR has grown from a two-person initiative into a highly skilled, multidisciplinary medical team, all of whom undergo ongoing training and continuous professional development to maintain the highest international standards. Our aviation operations are expertly managed by Helicopter Horizons, a leading Maun-based charter company. Their experienced bush pilots, 24/7 availability, hangar facilities, and logistical support ensure that OAR can respond swiftly, safely, and reliably—anytime, anywhere.

Helicopter Horizons

Helicopter Horizons is an ICAO approved Air Operator with a fleet of Bell Jetrangers and Robinson 44’s. The company upholds the highest international standards with regular government and independent audits carried out each year. All company Pilots have vast local “bush” knowledge which is vital when operating in the challenging environments of Southern Africa. The Pilots also go through rigorous biannual re-currency training to ensure their flying competency. They are trained in First Aid, and assist the medical Team if needed.
